ROS: Russian Operating System

It’s been a while since these talks started. There have been a lot of “for” and “against” opinions concerning the creation of a particular operating system which can be called Russian.

On the 15th of September, in Sochi, the Academy of Information Technologies and Federal Bureau of Technical and Export Control authorized Mandriva Linux distro as a stable version for corporate use.

As the result, Mandriva now can become a “standard” version of Operating System for governmental sectors in Russia.

Personally, I’ve never used it and can’t compare its functionality with other ’es, but the worst nightmares of ROS didn’t appear to be true, like:

  • Creating a brand new from scratch
  • Upgrade MSVS distro of

Will Mandriva be an only version of distro used in government sector or not - that’s the question, but a good thing is that is acknowledged as alternatives on government levels.

Measuring the level of integration, a good example is a massive integration of in China - project Red Flag Linux. Hopefully, this first step in Russia will make Open Source systems more popular then now.

Sorry if I’ve misunderstood something, but Mandriva Linux is as much “Russian” as Brazilian Portuguese…
As regards the “Government” level… concerning the scarcity of the financial and mental resources on that “government level”, I would look into some less favorable explanations to their choice.

Nevertheless, I’m happy for Linux which creeps and crawles all over the world including its farest corners :)

    2 Lana,

Yep, you’re right that it’s as Russian as any other Linux distro concerning the fact of big influence of Brazilian development teams in it.
However, this campaign for Mandriva promotion stinks with the smell of typical budget rip off. Useless investments for Open Source systems in different levels of government: no signs of R&D, so as usual, everything will end up in the middle of nowhere :)

Dear Andrey, i would like to know which operating system is communly spread in Russia? I need to optimize a website for clients who do business in Montenegro. The buyers are mainly Russians. We want to target the Russian clients. But,we experience a problem of compatibility with Firefox and the Russian language, but not with Windows Explorer. Which browser are using the russians? What to do to be found by Russian people ( and that they can read the website). Thank you so much. Regards

Elie, concerning the usage of OS’es in Russia - the main player is Windows XP and Vista. If we are talking about Linux distros - it’s mainly Gentoo, ArchLinux and others.
But once, we talk about website - 90% of Linux systems use Firefox as the default browser and IE7 for Windows machines.
“What to do to be found by Russian people” - ads, ads and ads. The main search engine if Russia - yandex.ru - you might find something useful up there for the promotion.
