Soviet architecture: MSU building

November 27th, 2007

There are a lot stereotypes about Soviet periods of (and of course those republics as a part of Soviet Union), but what’s really hilarious and comes to a standstill when you see the architecture of that non-existent country.

Just check out some photos of 50’s and present time of Moscow State University, which was built in 1954. I’ve resized some of them via Flickr account, however you can find out more pictures here. The author tries to compare the composition of MSU environment planned in 50’s with chaotic ensemble of New York skyscrapers. You can use Google Translator to check the post.

About Russian piracy

November 26th, 2007

Dmitry Chestnykh gives a nice review of Russian piracy, and the reasons of its appearance, stating “laziness” as its main cause.

Definitely, a lack of shopping services and/or its inability of serving transaction procedures is also one of the statements, here I agree with Dmitry.

However, I’m curious how many people really buy products in , because a simple googling will give bunch of forums and portals where you can find tones of cracks; thus using a cracked becomes really easy. Prising policy is definitely another cause, but it’s 21th century - we’ve got lots of open-source solutions which in some points are better then paid products.

And when are they going to purchase or any other products paying for them?..

Religion lessons in Russian schools

September 3rd, 2006

According to the latest , the government declared that from the primary school, pupils will be studied the , actually orthodox Christianity.

I remember my time of studying at school. We had these classes less then one semester, and it was completely useless. And it was in the second grade - not during 11 years of school.

With the multinational country and having a lot of religions, this kind of promoting one will be unprofitable. For example, living and studying in Tartar Republic of Russian Federation where 80% of people are Muslim, you’ll have to study orthodox . Sounds like non-sense!

In this case, the government will have replace the subject of “Christianity” by “The religions of the world” - because in you’ve got Christianity, Islam, Buddhism and other religions which are authorized by the Constitutional law, and all these religions will be lectured at school.

The other solution is the French “model” of complete separation of the from the educational system [as it was before, USSR inheritance], so the people won’t be discriminated by the religious aspect.

Right now, the government is walking on the thin line, trying to balance between the nationalistic problems in , and trying to keep the actual majority of people as a solid piece of nation. But unfortunately, the law system, and bureaucracy brings out completely different way of the society live.
